Meta to cut 8,000 jobs citing AI infrastructure investment
Meta announced plans to lay off approximately 8,000 employees on May 20, 2026, equivalent to about 10 percent of its workforce. The company will also cancel 6,000 open positions for which it had been actively hiring.
Meta has raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $125 billion and $145 billion, an increase of as much as 87 percent over 2025, with the majority of that spending directed at AI infrastructure, data centers, and GPU capacity.
