Simon Willison says vibe coding and agentic engineering are converging in his workflow

Veteran software engineer and AI commentator Simon Willison published an essay arguing that the distinction he had previously drawn between "vibe coding" and disciplined "agentic engineering" is beginning to dissolve in his own practice. Willison originally coined the agentic-engineering framing in early 2025 as a deliberate counterweight to vibe coding. While vibe coding implied accepting AI output on trust, agentic engineering was meant to describe an experienced engineer using AI tools to extend their capabilities while continuing to apply traditional software engineering rigor. In the new essay, Willison admits that as coding agents have become more reliable, he has stopped reviewing every line of code they produce, including for production work.
